New York based artisan and designer Rose Berger does not fit into the role of a traditional fashion designer. She started designing in 2005 while working full time in the IT Computer Technology field until she retired in February 2017. One week after retiring she featured her line of metal mesh dresses for New York fashion week. She is a trained silversmith and loves working with all types of metal. Her bespoke creations combine the labor intensity and intricacy of a couture piece with her unique mode of jewelry design. With her use of metal chain links, jump rings, rubber O rings and metals mesh, Rose creates a unique category in couture, merging dressmaking with adornment. Her work, for all intent and purpose, falls into the spectrum of functional and wearable art, as opposed to the confines of a traditional clothing line.

Rose’s love of jewelry stems from the role it plays in expressing an aesthetic while being an intricate vehicle of expression for all human cultures. That underlying realization prompted her to create designs that are more than just accessories – they are “wearable art” pieces, functional by design but philosophically close to a performance statement. In other words, a form of functional couture. So it is no surprise that Rose’s work comes highly recommended from the runways of New York Fashion Week and has been featured in Vogue Mexico, British Vogue, British GQ House of Coco UK, and the cover of Shuba magazine.

Rose Berger finds a certain sense of levity and love in working with metal. Taking just one small metal ring and connecting thousands of them together is for hera cathartic and intriguing process. Rose’s designs for fashion week are made with chains, jump rings, and metal mesh. That means it can take a month or more to create just one of her bespoke couture pieces. It is a labor intensive process that Rose crafts entirely by hand.

Her holistic approach to creating each piece is deeply rooted in her own identity as a trained silversmith. As a designer, as she incorporates her own methods to express her unique creative voice. She creates pieces that hold as strong as the metals she utilizes. Her bespoke designs reflect the timelessness of her creative process married with the uniquely modern esthetic of her creations.
