DESIGNER2013FEB8JanetZheng2

Janet Zheng started her eponymous menswear collection in 2011. The JANET ZHENG collection was inspired by combining structure with fluid form and applying freer creativity to traditional menswear staples. The overarching theme behind the line is to capitalize on each fabric’s natural characteristics and blend softness and drape with modern tailoring. The brand has been prominently featured in fashion editorials and publications since its inception including, but not limited to: Papercut Magazine; The Fashionisto; ELLE magazine; Nu-Mode Magazine; Dimension Magazine; Peter, Tom & Dave and the office MTV music video of song “I Told You So” by popular group Karmin. The collection’s goal is to inject newness into a man’s wardrobe with a level of aesthetic consistency from season to season.

Janet Zheng is a New York City based menswear designer. She was born in Kunming, China, moved to the US when she was a child, and spent the majority of her life in New York. Zheng graduated from the apparel design program at Cornell University where she won the coveted FGI (Fashion Group International) design competition grand prize and was a top ten finalist in the 2004 CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) Design Initiative Competition. After seven years of industry experience, Zheng launched her menswear line in 2011.

A female designer who solely designs menswear is a rarity in an industry dominated by men. Zheng feels that menswear is much more intriguing and complex than womenswear, but it lacks innovation, focus, and luster, particularly in the US market. She describes her clothing as being “refined, luxurious, and quality pieces that provide form, fit, style and function.” She has been aptly referred to as the woman who dresses the man.
