Fro-Nationale signifies an ethnically contemporary style, which offers a unique blend of vivacity and traditional symbolism, converted into a modern day aesthetic. Fro-Nationale takes its artwork influences from Africa, Asia and India and overlays these prints onto edgy, yet sophisticated ensembles. One of the most important features to the clothes is the quality fabrics that are used to create these beautiful silhouettes.   Great designs are nothing without quality fabric to bring them to life and we have made this a priority when creating collections.   We pick only the highest quality imported silks, wool, leather and cotton to work with, which is purchased locally from New York City’s garment district.   Our original artwork is printed onto these silks and cotton also locally in the garment district as well as Brooklyn, NY.  This fabric is then hand sewn by a local team of experienced and professional seamstresses who take great care in keeping the bar high and set the stage for the Fro-Nationale look.

Everything about Fro-Nationale is one of a kind.  Fro-Nationale captures the spirit and style of women like Founder, Amy Newton, who is the woman who doesn’t follow trends, she makes them.

Newton moved up the ranks at Yahoo! pretty quickly, transferred to their New York Office in 2007 to join the sales side of the business and quickly became a driven and successful Ad Sales Executive.  Being fully invested in Corporate America, her only creative outlet was her fashion and beauty regime.  Amy has a real passion for clothing and enjoys standing out from the crowd with bright, bold coloring, statement jewelry and high heel shoes.  Some of her favorite designers and influencers are Erdem, Boxing Kitten, Sheena Trivedi, Gareth Pugh, BCBG, Lionette jewelry, Luca Michelle, Eliana, Margot Bowman, Chichia London.  Ethnic patterns were always something that Amy loved to see on garments (i.e. Ankara, Indian, Asian etc) but she rarely found these types of patterns on garments that were “wearable” for everyday occasions.  It was in 2011 when she decided she was going to create her own womenswear fashion line that incorporated original artwork. The concept of the artwork is focused on those ethnic cultures and traditions that she had always gravitated towards.

Newton uses key ethnic symbols with positive meanings of “unity”, “energy”, “light” and many more.  She overlays with bold colors and patterns and modifies them to present a fun, edgy and trendy print for the modern day woman.   She was very excited at the prospect of creating her own version of ethnic patterns and felt that her concept for the patterns was original and not something she had encountered before.   In 2012, she enrolled in several Fashion Design certifications at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York to “brush up” on her design skills, which had not been used in a while, and she began designing in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop as soon as she could.   Newton starts with the print first and works backwards.  Her designs are truly “art to wear” in that it starts with an idea of symbolism, which then extends to contemporary clothing designs.   She loves to design cool dresses, jackets and pants that are edgy yet sophisticated in their nature, making them available to both professional women in corporate as well as the artsy community.

This really portrays who she is as a designer and a business woman.
