DENiM by Asa Jean was originally created by a broke ten-year-old girl who refused to leave the house in anything less than “runway ready” attire. With a closet full of hand-me-downs and thrift apparel, she had to take matters into her own hands. All it took were a pair of scissors, a needle, thread, and a wild imagination. Every night that little girl created a new ensemble for the next day and ten years later she’s blessed to be able to create ensembles for others. DENiM by Asa Jean has grown into a brand that encompasses fashion, art, and inspiration. DENiM not only includes attire made for EVERYONE but is on a quest to give back to children just like that ten-year-old girl who started it all. DENiM by Asa Jean features wearable art, up-cycled ensembles, hand-made apparel, and original artistic prints with much more in its future.
One of my earliest memories is from age four. It was a hot July day in East Orange, NJ and we were off to the park. I was wearing a red and blue skirt set with white accents and the cutest little blue shoes. I remember looking up at my baby brother and older cousin walking out of the house in their denim shorts and matching t-shirts, my emotional meltdown was instantaneous. After I calmed down, I demanded my mother put me into some denim shorts as well. That was the first time I had ever given my fashion advice and the last time my mom picked out my outfit. I hadn’t realized this until last year but in that moment, the boss Asa Jean was born. And along the way she’d acquire titles such as designer, seamstress, artist, stylist and so much more.
My entire life, I chased careers as ambitious as neurosurgeon, dermatologist and genetics professor; all the while, being the best dressed in every crowd I stood in. Fashion has been my oldest friend and only constant in such an exhilarating existence. I was always meant to be a fashion designer and am so blessed to be one today and forever more.
